Presidents Trophy
-
First Awarded in 1985-86 to the Edmonton Oilers.
-
Presented at the end of the season to the team with
the best regular season record.
-
Winning team receives $350,000 dollars (recently
increased from $200,000) of which the franchise gets half with the
remaining half split between the players on the team.
-
Winning team has home ice advantage throughout the
playoffs including the Stanley Cup Finals.
-
The Presidents Trophy has now been presented 14 times
to 9 different teams.
-
6 times an "Original Six Team" has won
the award.
Editors Opinion:
There are two things I would like to see changed in the
presentation of this award:
-
That the team receiving the award donate the monetary
proceeds to a scholarship fund which can be applied for by students of
all nations providing players to the NHL. I believe the prestige of
winning the Presidents Trophy should be more than enough reward for
the teams' players and the organization. So why not donate the money
to charity or provide a scholarship fund?
-
Drop the automatic home ice advantage given during the
Stanley Cup Finals. Giving home ice advantage to the winner simply
doesn't make since because inter-conference play is limited. It would
be more appropriate for the league to rotate which conference is
awarded home ice in the finals on a yearly basis. East could get it on
even years and the West on odd years.
